Orient3D v3.2 (obsolete)

What is your orientation ? Find east, west, south, north, up, down and more with this sensor in any position. Obtain the heading, pitch and roll of any object. A digital I2C sensor, that outputs high resolution, low-noise signals.

View the sensor data using our Orient3D software (see below). Mount on your body with Wearability.

Application information

Product Orient3D sensor
Examples
  1. Use it as a sophisticated game controller.
  2. Allow your robot or toy car to know what's up and down, and left and right etc. Combine with a ReachClose to detect distance and/or use the Orient3D's raw accelerometer data to detect tilt and impacts with walls and what have you.
  3. Use 5 Orient3D on a human body and calculate its posture (some math skills required !).
  4. Place it on the TouchGlove's palm pad and create a wicked musical instrument that transforms your hand motions into audio effects .. use both our Orient3D software (see below) and the TouchGlove software to get the TouchGlove's finger tip touch sensors to send MIDI NoteOn messages that trigger the sounds.
Manuals Using the sensor with the Wi-microSystem enables you to use the sensor without being tethered to your computer or MIDI device.
  1. Make sure the sensor is plugged into the digitizer with the red wire connected to power. Reversing the plug may cause damage to the sensor.
  2. Requires a digitizer with digital (I2C) ports, eg. the WiDig, USB-microDig or the Wi-microDig.
  3. The default I2C address is 96 (0x60). Both I2C lines have 1.8 kOhm pull-up resistors.
  4. Our software enables you to use most features of this sensor. In EditorX, use the method parameter to set the sensor to output (method #0) Euler angles, (method #2) magnetic field strength, (method #3) linear acceleration, (method #4) rotational acceleration and (methods #9-29) combinations thereof, including (method#29) temperature.
  5. See the Orient3D function description in the firmware documentation for more details about the various methods available in host and standalone mode.
  6. For more technical specs, and to find out how to access the sensor data in detail, please consult this datasheet.
  7. Any magnetic materials or fields in the vicinity of the sensor may distort the sensor output.
  8. The Orient3D sensors can loose their calibration such that even the factory calibration is no longer useful and it would appear the sensor is no longer usable. However, by manually re-calibrating it (a very simple procedure available in the Orient3D app), proper operation can be restored.
  9. The minimum sampling interval may depend on your computer. If you experience that the digitizer stops sending data only after a delay once you have set the on/off button to "off", and/or that the axes switch (eg. heading is shown as pitch, pitch is shown as roll and roll is shown as heading), increase the sampling interval.
  10. To extend the cable, use ExtendCableD-01 and/or ExtendCableD-10.
  11. The sensor comes fitted with a 1x4 plug for use with a USB-microDig running firmware v7.51 or higher or firmware v7.33 but includes an extra 1x4 housing to modify the plug for use with a Wi-microDig running firmware v6.33. There's also the AdaptCableDto2D and the AdaptCableKit. Or get the Orient3D v3.1, which is made with a 2x4 plug.
Software
  • Our EditorX software allows you to configure the digitizer to process and map the sensor data of multiple sensors simultaneously.

  • 23 Aug 2019: Orient3D v5.24 for MacOS and Windows from source code in Max. For multiple sensors or sensor outputs, run multiple instances of the application, each started in its own folder. Requires a digitizer with firmware v7.51 or higher, v7.33 or higher (but lower than v7.50), or v6.33 or higher (but lower than v7.00). Use together with Connect (MacOS / Windows).
  • 19 Jan 2018: Orient3D v5.21 for MacOS and Windows from source code in Max. For multiple sensors or sensor outputs, run multiple instances of the application, each started in its own folder. Requires a digitizer with firmware v7.51 or higher, v7.33 or v6.33. Use together with Connect (MacOS / Windows).
  • 03 Nov 2017: Orient3D v5.20 for MacOS (Sierra or lower) and Windows from source code in Max. For multiple sensors or sensor outputs, run multiple instances of the application, each started in its own folder. Requires a digitizer with firmware v7.5, v7.3, v7.2, v6.3 or v6.2. Use together with Connect (MacOS / Windows).
