Advance-645 v1.0 (obsolete)

Create awareness of your surroundings. Ultrasonically senses distances of objects from 0.152 to 6.45 m (0.500 to 21.2 ft.), depending on object size and acoustic reflectivity. Detects people up to approximately 2 m (6 ft). Is invisible to the audience. Completely silent to the human ear, hence it is suitable for sound installations.

Application examples

  1. Use for distance measurement relative to a wall or presence detection of objects and persons (it cannot detect the number of people present).
  2. Combine with a TapTiled floor, some MoveOn and/or ReachClose sensors and make sure every move of your visitor has an effect. Perhaps the TouchStripOn is useful for additional coverage on walls. The Flash + SeeLaser combo allows you to implement break-beams that could indicate borders or thresholds.

Technical specifications

Version 1.0 (2006)
Sensing parameter distance, proximity
Sensing method ultrasonic (42 KHz) MB1010 sensor
Active volume between a 36 to 50 ° cone, at most 1.5 m (5 ft) wide, and a 0.6 m (2 ft) wide cylinder (see application notes below)
Range 0.152 to 6.45 m (0.500 to 21.2 ft.), dependent on object size and acoustic reflectivity
Resolution 2.5 cm (1.0 inch)
Update rate 20 Hz
Calibration
m ft Voltage (use 5 V power supply) 7-bit MIDI value (use 'no processing' editor preset)
0.152 0.500 0 0
6.45 21.2 2.54 65
Operating temperature -40° to 85° C (-40° to 185° F)
Power supply 4.75 to 5.25 V DC, 2 mA
Sensor dimensions 20 x 22 x 16.4 mm (0.79 x 0.87 x 0.65 inch)
Weight 4.4 g (0.16 oz), incl. cable
Cable 5.0 m (16 ft), shielded, red wire = power, black wire = ground, white wire = sensor output
Connector male plug with a row of 3 pins spaced 2.54 mm (0.100 inch)
Application notes
  1. Upon power-up, the sensor performs a distance calibration, so if anything is closer than 35 cm (14 inch) it can cause close objects to be ignored.
  2. The active volume in which small or non-reflective (such as people) objects are detected is a cone that is at most approximately 1.5 m (5 ft) wide. For an object at least 11 inch wide and flat, facing parallel to the sensor, the active volume is mostly a cylinder with a 0.6 m (2 ft) diameter.
  3. The maximum distance at which objects can be detected is dependent on the object's dimensions. Small or non-reflective (such as people) are detected at up to approximately 2 m (6 ft). To detect an object at the maximum distance of 6.45 m (21.2 ft) the object should be at least 11 inch wide and flat, facing parallel to the sensor.
  4. Multiple sensors can be placed adjacently where the spacing is determined by the maximum distance to be measured at which distance the ultrasound emission cones should not overlap. Note that these emission cones are larger than the active volume cones.
  5. Any indirect echoes of the ultrasonic pulse (eg. from the sidewalls in a narrow corridor) may generate incorrect sensor output values.
