This sensor implements a basic RFID tracking protocol, where RFID stands for Radio-Frequency Identification. Track your assets on stage by attaching an RFID tag to them and use the ReachID sensor to identify them. A digital I2C sensor, that outputs high resolution, low-noise signals. Comes with 7 RFID tags - one creditcard-sized, one in the shape of a plastic disc of about 3 cm diameter that can be easily attached to a keychain and 5 in the shape of a paper-thin disc of about 3 cm diameter with adhesive backing for easy attaching on all kinds of objects.

Requires a WiDig, or USB-microDig running firmware v7.5 or higher.

Application examples

  1. Allow an actor on stage to trigger an event by placing his/her hand (to which an RFID tag is attached) on a specific object that's instrumented with the ReachID sensor.

Software support
  • Our EditorX software allows you to configure the digitizer to process and map the sensor data of multiple sensors simultaneously.
Application notes
  1. Make sure the sensor is plugged into the digitizer with the red wire connected to power. Reversing the plug may cause damage to the sensor.
  2. Requires a WiDig or USB-microDig running firmware v7.5 or higher.
  3. The default I2C address is 36 (0x24). Both I2C lines have 10 kOhm pull-up resistors.
  4. Our software enables you to use most features of this sensor. In EditorX, the ReachID setting configures the detection of multiple tags or just one tag.
If the method is greater than zero, a summed value of the tag's Unique ID bytes is output, which will allow you to distinguish between multiple tags. Change the mapping to pitch-bend messages if the value appears to be the same for some tags. Given the loss of bits as a result of the summation, it's possible that the summed value is the same for some tags even when mapping to pitch bend messages. In this case use another tag.
To detect just one tag and have it output a specific value when detecting the tag, set the method to the desired output value and then hold the tag over the sensor for a moment to allow it to be detected by the ReachID. Then remove the tag and set the method number to zero. The desired value is now output whenever the tag is detected.
  5. See the ReachID function description in the firmware documentation for more details about the various methods available in host and standalone mode.
  6. For more technical specs, and to find out how to access the sensor data in detail, please consult this datasheet.
  7. The number of ReachID sensors that can be used with one digitizer is determined by the maximum current that can be supplied to all sensors by the USB-microDig, ie. about 250 mA, divided by the maximum current required by the ReachID, ie. about 50 mA. Hence, at most 5 ReachID sensors can be used with the USB-microDig.
  8. To extend the cable, use ExtendCableD-01 and/or ExtendCableD-10.
