Max

A widely used piece of software from Cycling74.

Max is a visual programming language originally designed for musicians, but now also used for multimedia applications. It is available for MacOS and Windows. It also comes in a runtime version that allows you to use applications built with Max without having to buy Max itself. It can be used with Ableton Live software through Max for Live, allowing direct I-CubeX control.

With Max go wild on control. MSP is a set of plugins for Max that enable you to process sounds in real-time. It expands your Max environment into the digital signal processing realm. Jitter does the same for video and image. There's a sizable community of Max users and developers with all kinds of support such as the Max objects website.

As an alternative to Max, consider Pd. It is an open-source, free software like Max, for which we also made a plugin.

We developed a number of software tools to use with Max as well as examples and applications, see below. Where useful we made versions available that can be used for free with Max runtime.
