The BioVolt captures the skin surface voltage on your head such as signals from facial muscles (EMG) and eyes (EOG). On the rest of your body it captures the skin surface voltage from any muscle (EMG), including the heart muscles (ECG). Get new BioElectrodes when you run out of them.

Apply the BioVolt sensor for live performance, research or rehab with our BioBeat, BioVolt, MuscleTrainer or SensorX software. Use the BioVolt with a wireless WiSystem in all cases to operate conveniently without tether and ensure electrically safe operation - see disclaimer below.

Application information

Product BioVolt sensor
Examples

Use multiple BioVolts to capture EMGs of various muscles, ECG (or use the BioBeat3D or BioBeat to capture heartbeat rate) and then combine it with a BioEmo to capture GSR as well as a BioAir to capture breathing. Become zen and still perform.

  • Use BioVolt with the MuscleTrainer software (see below) for rehab.
  • Perform heartbeat controlled audio with the BioBeat software (see below).
  • Try your hand at myo-electric controlled robotics.
  • Add intensity to your musical performance by tweaking your sound through frowns, winks and other histrionics captured by a BioVolt on your head.
  • For whole-body expression go bodysuit, capture all your joints' movements and express with all your extremities. Combine with BendMicro, BendMini and BendShort sensors from finger to toe. Add a GForce3D on your feet and hands to capture kicks and punches. A Hot will keep you in check of your body temp. Top it all off with a TouchGlove on both hands to always be able to touch-control your performance, even when you're doing a handstand.
  • Read up on Atau Tanaka's work with the BioFlex.
  • Read up on Alexis Kirke's work (and more here with the BioBeat, BioEmo, BioFlex and BioWave).
  • For sleep research, use the BioVolt for muscle contractions and combine with an Orient4D for body orientation, HotSpot2D for respiration, BioEmo for GSR, and BioBeat3D for heartbeat, blood oxygen level and skin temperature.
  • On MacOS, if upon attempting to run the app a popup appears stating that the app is damaged, type "sudo spctl --master-disable" in a terminal to bypass the Apple Gatekeeper. See also eg. this post.
Manuals

Using the sensor with the WiSystem not only ensures electrically safe operation (see disclaimer below) but also enables you to use the sensor without being tethered to your computer or MIDI device.

  1. To place the sensor correctly on the body read page 5 of this datasheet.
  2. Turn the sensor on with the slide switch on the edge of the sensor. A red LED will turn on.
  3. You may need to adjust the gain using the metal potentiometer on the BioVolt (on the side without the electrode contacts, on the end opposite from the cable).
  4. A green LED will light up if the muscle tension is detected.
  5. For more technical specs please consult this datasheet.
Software

  • Our SensePlay software is a very easy way to quickly map sensor data to (sequences of) sounds, images and videos using a drag & drop user interface.
  • Our EditorX software allows you to configure the digitizer to process and map the sensor data of multiple sensors simultaneously.
  • Our Link software allows you to receive the sensor data from the digitizer and use your computer to view, calibrate, record, process and map the sensor data of multiple sensors simultaneously.
  • Our SensorX software allows you to receive the sensor data from the digitizer and use your computer to view, calibrate, record, process and map the data of a single sensor.

  • 03 Nov 2017: BioBeat v2.30 for MacOS and Windows (64bit) and MacOS and Windows (32bit) from source code in Max. For multiple sensors or sensor outputs, run multiple instances of the application, each started in its own folder. Use together with Connect (MacOS / Windows).
  • 07 Dec 2014: BioVolt v1.00 for MacOS and Windows (64bit) and MacOS (32bit) from source code in Max. For multiple sensors or sensor outputs, run multiple instances of the application, each started in its own folder. Use together with Connect (MacOS / Windows).
  • 07 Dec 2014: MuscleTrainer v1.00 for MacOS and Windows (64bit) and MacOS (32bit) from source code in Max. For multiple sensors or sensor outputs, run multiple instances of the application, each started in its own folder. Use together with Connect (MacOS / Windows).

Disclaimer
The BioVolt sensor is to be used only with extreme caution. It is intended for research purposes only and not intended for use in any clinical medical practice whatsoever.
  1. The BioVolt sensor must only be plugged into a battery powered, wireless I-CubeX digitizer (eg. the WiDig, Wi-microDig or Wi-miniDig) manufactured by Infusion Systems and not any other digitizer.
  2. The BioVolt sensor must only be connected as shown in the diagram on the wireless digitizer.
  3. The wireless digitizer used with the BioVolt sensor must only be powered by a common 9V battery as used in consumer goods or an I-CubeX BatteryPack.
  4. Only I-CubeX sensors may be connected to the wireless digitizer that is used for interfacing the BioVolt.
  5. When using the BioVolt sensor, I-CubeX products may not be connected in any way to the electrical power grid or any other high voltage source.
Any violation of these instructions nullifies any warranty (express or implied) and nullifies any liability or culpability (express or implied) of Infusion Systems Ltd.. Any violation of these instructions can result in electrocution, severe injury, or even death.
