Be I-CubeX-ed in a heartbeat. This sensor will capture your pulse simply by placing the sensor anywhere on your body where blood is flowing right below the skin surface, like your finger tip or earlobe. Doubles as a sensor for blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). Triples as a (skin) temperature sensor. A digital I2C sensor, that outputs calibrated, high resolution, low-noise signals. Comes with two velcro strips to secure the sensor to a finger tip.

Requires a WiDig, or USB-microDig running firmware v7.51 or higher. The WiDig or USB-microDig can only support one BioBeat3D.

Application information

Product BioBeat sensor
Examples The BioBeat3D combines perfectly with the BioEmo, and BioVolt. Become zen and still perform.
  1. Add intensity to your musical performance by tweaking your sound through signals straight from the heart.
  2. Perform heartbeat controlled audio with the BioBeat3D software (see below).
  3. For whole-body expression go bodysuit, capture all your joints' movements and express with all your extremities. Combine with BendMicro, BendMini and BendShort sensors from finger to toe. Add a GForce3D-6 on your feet and hands to capture kicks and punches. A Hot will keep you in check of your body temp. Top it all off with a TouchGlove on both hands to always be able to touch-control your performance, even when you're doing a handstand.
  4. For sleep research, combine with an Orient4D for body orientation, a HotSpot2D for respiration, a BioEmo for skin conductance, and a BioVolt for muscle contractions.
Manuals
  1. Make sure the sensor is plugged into the digitizer with the red wire connected to power. Reversing the plug may cause damage to the sensor.
  2. Requires a WiDig or USB-microDig running firmware v7.51 or higher.
  3. The WiDig or USB-microDig firmware can process the data of only one BioBeat3D.
  4. To mount the sensor on the finger, place the sensor on your finger tip and wrap the velcro strip around it to secure the sensor in place. Wrap the second velcro strip around the cable and another part of the finger, see picture below. The sensor can be placed anywhere on the body where blood is flowing right below the skin surface.
  5. If the sensor is pressed onto the skin too hard, or if the skin is whitish (eg. because it is too cold), there will be no signal variation that corresponds to the blood flow. If it is pressed onto the skin too lightly, the sensor may move relatively to the skin too easily resulting in too large signal variations. In either case no heartbeat can be detected.
  6. After the sensor is enabled, it takes a few seconds before the heartbeat is detected continuously and heartbeat rate and/or blood oxygen saturation are output. Skin temperature is output immediately after the sensor is enabled.
  7. The default I2C address is 87 (0x57). Both I2C lines have 10 kOhm pull-up resistors.
  8. See the BioBeat3D function description in the firmware documentation for more details about the various methods available in host and standalone mode.
  9. For more technical specs, and to find out how to access the sensor data in detail, please consult this datasheet.
  10. To extend the cable, use ExtendCableD-01 and/or ExtendCableD-10.
  11. For further reading we recommend studying about the photoplethysmogram and pulse oximetry.
Software
  • Our software enables you to use most features of this sensor. In EditorX, use the method parameter to set the sensor to output (method #0) heartbeat pulse, heartbeat rate, SpO2 and skin temperature, (method #2-124) heartbeat pulse, heartbeat rate, blood oxygen saturation and skin temperature as well as the raw sensor data in the form of reflected infra-red and red light intensity values (both scaled by the method number), (method #125) heartbeat pulse and heartbeat rate, (method #126) blood oxygen saturation or (method #127) temperature.

  • 16 Jul 2019: BioBeat3D v1.10 for MacOS and Windows from source code in Max. Requires a digitizer with firmware v7.51 or higher. For multiple sensors or sensor outputs, run multiple instances of the application, each started in its own folder. Use together with Connect (MacOS / Windows).
  • 22 Jan 2018: BioBeat3D v1.01 for MacOS and Windows from source code in Max. Requires a digitizer with firmware v7.51 or higher. For multiple sensors or sensor outputs, run multiple instances of the application, each started in its own folder. Use together with Connect (MacOS / Windows).
