This sensor implements a basic RFID tracking protocol, where RFID stands for Radio-Frequency Identification. Track your assets on stage by attaching an RFID tag to them and use the ReachID sensor to identify them. A digital I2C sensor, that outputs cailbrated, high resolution, low-noise signals. Comes with 7 RFID 13.56 MHz tags (ISO/IEC 14443) - one creditcard-sized, one in the shape of a plastic disc of about 3 cm diameter that can be easily attached to a keychain and 5 in the shape of a paper-thin disc of about 3 cm diameter with adhesive backing for easy attaching on all kinds of objects.

Requires a WiDig running firmware v8.3 or higher.

Application examples

  • Allow an actor on stage to trigger an event by placing his/her hand (to which an RFID tag is attached) on a specific object that's instrumented with the ReachID sensor.

Other human, animal and object sensors

We offer a number of sensors to detect motion and/or presence and/or proximity of humans, animals and objects in a space:

  • For a motion sensor with variety of sensitivity and output configuration options, view the MoveOn v1.8.
  • If you need a motion sensor of which the output changes each time any motion is detected so that it can be smoothed to give a signal that roughly represents the amount of activity, checkout the MoveOn v1.4.

  • Need pin-point distance detection ? The ReachFar and its digital, laser-accurate cousin ReachFarD detect distance up to 4 m within a cone of a few degrees. The ReachClose and its digital, laser-accurate cousin ReachCloseD do the same but up to 2 m.
  • Setup perimeters with break-beams made from a SeeLaser-Red or the invisible SeeLaser-IR (or any of our SeeLaser products) and a Flash.
  • Place TapTile, TapMatOn or TapStripOn sensors on the floor or stairs to detect a person stepping or standing on it, and even get a measure of the exerted force.
  • To know exactly who is present, use the ReachID and let each visitor be detected through their RFID tag.

Application notes
  1. Make sure the sensor is plugged into the digitizer with the red wire connected to power. Reversing the plug may cause damage to the sensor.
  2. Requires a WiDig running firmware v8.3 or higher.
  3. The default I2C address is 36 (0x24). Both I2C lines have 10 kOhm pull-up resistors.
  4. The ReachID setting configures the detection and matching of multiple tags or just one tag.
  5. In standalone mode use EditorX as follows. If the method is greater than zero, a summed value of the tag's Unique ID bytes is output, which will allow you to distinguish between multiple tags. Change the mapping to pitch-bend messages if the value appears to be the same for some tags. Given the loss of bits as a result of the summation, it's possible that the summed value is the same for some tags even when mapping to pitch bend messages. In this case use another tag.
    To detect just one tag and have it output a specific value when detecting the tag, set the method to the desired output value and then hold the tag over the ReachID for a moment to allow it to be detected by the ReachID and its ID stored in the WiDig. Then remove the tag and set the method number to zero. The desired value is now output whenever the tag is detected and its ID matches the stored tag ID. To erase the stored tag ID and its associated output value, select method 127 (it is not necessary to turn the input on).
  6. In host mode, use Connect as follows. With a tag present, set the method to any value greater than zero but not 127 and the Unique ID bytes of the tag will be stored together with the method number which serves as the match confirmation value. The Unique ID bytes will be output followed by the match confirmation value, in a MIDI system exclusive message. With the method set to zero, and a tag present, if the tag Unique ID bytes match the stored Unique ID bytes, the tag Unique ID bytes will be output followed by the match confirmation value. Otherwise, if there is no match, a zero follows as match confirmation value.
    With the method set to zero, and no tag present, no data is output. To reset the Unique ID bytes of the tag to match, set the method to 127 (it is not necessary to turn the input on) and the Unique ID bytes of the tag to match and its match confirmation value will be set to zero.
  7. The tag Unique ID bytes, once stored, are used in both host and standalone mode. Match confirmation value in host mode is the same as the mapped value in standalone mode.
  8. When enabling OSC output in Connect, the OSC message contains the output values as an array.
  9. The ReachID can detect many different RFID tags: 1k, 4k, Ultralight, and DesFire cards, CD97BX, CD light, Desfire, P5CN072 (SMX) cards, Innovision Jewel cards such as IRT5001 card, FeliCa cards such as RCS_860 and RCS_854.

  12. The number of ReachID sensors that can be used with one digitizer is determined by the maximum current that can be supplied to all sensors by the WiDig, ie. about 250 mA, divided by the maximum current required by the ReachID, ie. about 50 mA. Hence, at most 5 ReachID sensors can be used with the WiDig.
  13. To extend the cable, use ExtendCableD-01 and/or ExtendCableD-10.
