Measure the amount of a variety of gases in the form of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, iso-butane and ethanol (ie. alcohol).

Application examples

  1. Combine with the Wet, Moist, Hot, Humid, Air and Light sensors and use it to generate an artistic rendering of the environment's status with dynamically changing graphics.
  2. Sound the alarm by turning on a Buzz when somebody is smoking a cigarette, when the BBQ is beginning to burn the meat or when the cat has farted !
  3. Plants emit VOCs when they are eaten or damaged. We didn't try it, but perhaps these VOCs can be detected with this sensor ?

Software support

  1. Our SensePlay software is a very easy way to quickly map sensor data to (sequences of) sounds, images and videos using a drag & drop user interface.
  2. Our EditorX software allows you to configure the digitizer to process and map the sensor data of multiple sensors simultaneously.
  3. Our Link software allows you to receive the sensor data from the digitizer and use your computer to view, calibrate, record, process and map the sensor data of multiple sensors simultaneously.
  4. Our SensorX software allows you to receive the sensor data from the digitizer and use your computer to view, calibrate, record, process and map the data of a single sensor.

Application notes
  1. The sensor has high sensitivity to low concentrations of gaseous air contaminants such as alcohol, hydrogen and carbon monoxide which exist in cigarette smoke.
  2. It takes a few seconds before the sensor is fully operational. Also, the response depends on the concentration of the gases where the sensor is located. If the area is well ventilated where the sensor is located, the response will be faster but the output may be lower as the concentration of the gases is reduced.
  3. The sensor has an LED on the bottom that turns on depending on the potentiometer (also on the bottom) setting. Set the potentiometer at the level of air contaminants that you wish to detect and the LED will light up.
